README file for American Girls 2 (c) 1994 New Machine Publishing. All Rights Reserved. =========================================================================== Welcome to American Girls 2, just one of many full length movies, photo discs, and interactive adventures available from New Machine Publishing. Please glance over these paragraphs, and if you have any questions call us! =========================================================================== INSTALLATION: To install, run the INSTALL.EXE program in the \PC directory on the CD-ROM. The installation is completely noninvasive and consists only of creating a program group and icons in the Program Manager which point to the CD-ROM drive applications. YOUR NEW ICONS: To begin viewing slides double-click on the American Girls 2 icon. Allow 5-15 seconds for loading. The first time the program is run you will be prompted to enter a password. If you choose to password protect access to this product, only the first 8 characters of the password are recognized. There are twenty girls arranged on four screens of five girls each. Use the Left and Right controller buttons to rotate through the four screens (regions: North, South, East, West). By clicking on any of the twenty girls, a slide show will begin displaying photos of that particular girl. A slide show scrolls through the photos continuously, pausing at each photo for a few seconds. The right arrow advances to the next region of the main menu or shows the next photo. The left arrow reverses to the last region of the main menu or shows the last photo. The B button returns to the four main menus (North, South, East, or West). The Q button quits the application. To hide the controller while viewing full screen photos, just click the right mouse button. Click again to restore the controller. Click on any picture to enlarge the photo. Menu bar commands: File Menu - Returns to the main menu from viewing photos. Same as clicking on the B button of the controller. Exit - Quits the program. Same as clicking on the Q button of the controller. Group East - Shows the "East region" selection screen. South - Shows the "South region" selection screen. West - Shows the "West region" selection screen. North - Shows the "North region" selection screen. Slide Show On - Scrolls through the photos of the selected girl continuously Off - Turns the slide show off. Sound On - Plays music repeatedly throughout the application. Off - Turns the music off. If the music suspends while loading pictures, you need to increase the size of the audio buffer. This can be done in Control Panel|Drivers|"[MCI] Sound"|Setup. Most of the images in the application (as many as we could fit) are available in JPEG, high color format in the \PC\JPGS directory. To view them, run the Picture Viewer icon and load them individually. At 256 colors these JPEG pictures dither, so you must be using a video resolution HIGHER than 256 colors. As requested by many of our customers, most of the images in the application (as many as we could fit) are also included in GIF format. They are located in \PC\GIFS. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS: To view the pictures you should have a 386 or better CPU with 8-bit (256 color) or better graphics, a sound card, Microsoft Windows 3.1 and DOS 5.0, and a mouse. Your PC should have at least 4MB of RAM, and a CD-ROM drive. Be sure Windows is using a display driver that will provide 256 colors (or higher). This product is not designed for 16-color displays (e.g., the standard Windows VGA driver). If your colors look bad, run Windows Setup to install the display driver provided by your video card manufacturer that supports 256 colors (any resolution). If you don't have much video memory, select "640x480 256 color" in Windows Setup. Operation will be a little faster, the window will be physically largest, and best results are expected, if you use 640x480 resolution rather than anything higher. If you operate in 1024x768 resolution, you may find that the "small fonts" driver works better than the "large fonts" driver (or, less frequently, vice versa, depending who wrote the drivers). ATI's "Crystal Fonts" mode is not supported. Change the Video driver to 1024x768 small fonts, or use a lower resolution. If you have problems reading any of your CD-ROMs check the CD-ROM for any scratches or finger prints. Use a soft cloth to wipe from the center to the edge. CD-ROMs are more vulnerable to damage than audio CDs, so always place them in the jewel box or CD caddies whenever possible. Color conflicts can be caused by your wallpaper. If the program loads up in the wrong colors, simply quit, set the wallpaper to [none] in Control-Panel|Desktop and run again. If memory managers such as QEMM or 386 MAX are used and the program does not work, sometimes the creation of a system boot disk which loads only the necessary devices, all loaded low, will fix the problem. =========================================================================== WARRANTY AND TERMS OF LIABILITY New Machine Publishing makes no warranties, expressed or implied, including without limitation the implied warranties of merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose, regarding the software.
